Scan to BIM: Kilián Barracks, Budapest

Adaptive reuse project of Kilián Laktanya, a barracks building located in the heart of Budapest. It’s a massive building of almost 60,000 square meters, that has been largely unused for some time. Our first step involved laser scanning the building to create a digital twin model, using Building Information Modeling or BIM. With big buildings, the complexity grows exponentially. One of our initial hurdles was planning and access. We had a tight one-month window to complete the scanning. Some doors were welded shut; others required coordination with a facility manager who might or might not know which keys opened which doors. And in some cases, we had to work around the schedules of storage unit owners within the building.

Green and Black Ceramic in the Heart of Budapest’s Forests

The nature closeness and spirituality of Dobogókő definitely require a modest, not too intrusive approach, despite the fact that the hotel, restaurant and wellness function demands a significant footprint. The pitched roof of the upper level is also a deliberate decision: on one hand, it creates the impression of a smaller building, and on the other hand, it has a friendlier, more human, and more traditional approach.

BIM Model of the Bedő House in Budapest, Hungary

Bedő House – Budapest, Hungary

As a prerequisite for the renovation, interior design planning requires the creation of a detailed BIM (Building Information Modeling) model. This model will form the basis for a confident concept, detailed visual plans, and millimeter-precise execution plans. We assisted the client in this regard by performing scan-to-BIM tasks.

The organic forms of the Bedő House and its ornate, Art Nouveau-style façade posed a challenge during the modeling process. However, our talented colleagues managed to accurately model the details of the building in BIM.
