Windtower House

In the vibrant landscape of the United Arab Emirates, there is a growing demand for affordable yet high-quality living spaces. As the nation continues to evolve and prosper, there is an increasing need to address the aspirations of both residents and the environment. This architectural competition seeks innovative designs that cater to the demand for sustainable, comfortable, and accessible housing solutions in the UAE, embracing the unique blend of tradition and innovation that defines the region.

We pondered the vision of the House of the Future in the United Arab Emirates. How do we strike a balance between global and local, eco-friendly and high-tech? Our endeavor was to create a structure that seamlessly blends into its surroundings, respecting local traditions, while ushering in innovation. Our technological interventions are discreet, designed with a human-centered approach, offering interaction only where essential, in the most comprehensive manner. Our belief lies in advanced technology rooted in a profound understanding of physics, robust and energy-efficient.

House of the Future - Floor Plans

Our project, named Windcatcher House, pays homage to the traditional windcatcher element used in this region for centuries. Although its underlying principles differ, we retained it as a visual emblem. Our innovative solution draws in cool air via subterranean pipes, establishing a natural airflow system. As indoor air warms, it ascends through the tower, exiting the house and drawing in fresh air from beneath. The tower’s glass doors can be opened or closed, and a technological solution atop the tower regulates airflow.

Our architectural program draws inspiration from local customs and traditions. Embracing the desire to maintain the sanctity of separation between female residents and male visitors, our design features two distinct wings: the private and the public. Staff quarters thoughtfully connect to the private wing while remaining visually discrete. The private wing’s highlight is the concealed pool, providing privacy for the women of the house. Bedrooms are situated upstairs. The public wing offers various spaces for socializing, including a majlis and a public living room, along with concealed outdoor areas for private discussions or larger gatherings in the garden.
