DALL-E: The Undisputed Champion of AI Christmas Card Design

Introduction

Christmas is around the corner, and at Vertex Pavilions, we wanted to do something fun and different this year. So, we decided to use AI to design our Christmas card. Why? Because we love blending tech with creativity – it’s what we do!

We wanted our card to stand out, featuring a fractal Christmas tree that’s not just cool but also elegant. We put four AI tools to the test: Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Stable Diffusion, and Chat GPT 4 with DALL-E. We’re excited to show you what each one created.

The promp we used was (a close variation of) the following: “Christmas greeting card with simple elegant 2d vector art of a fractal christmas tree. Sent from Vertex Pavilions. Write “Merry Christmas!” and below it with smaller font “Vertex Pavilions” on it.”

DALL-E: The Clear Winner

We asked Chat GPT4 with integrated DALL-E and it  really nailed it. It wasn’t just about making a pretty picture. DALL-E understood exactly what we wanted. The fractal tree it designed was just right – stylish yet simple. It even added the right words to the card without any hassle, something the other AIs struggled with.

What’s more, DALL-E did something extra cool. It created mockups of the card, showing us how it would look in real life. DALL-E understood exactly the notion of a greeting card and that it means print design. The cover image of this article is of course also made by DALL-E.

Midjourney: Second Best?

Midjourney in certain applications is the best image generator AI out there, with a vast history and some exciting new features on the way. Although this task was obviously not a great fit for the AI algorithm.

Firefly: The Only Free AI in this Lineup

Adobe’s Firefly is one of the lesser-known AI image generators out there, although still one of the market leaders, and the only free AI that we used for this article, as the others are all premium versions.

Stable Diffusion: SDXL Turbo

While its offline accessibility and custom dataset usage are pluses, Stable Diffusion has a steep learning curve and requires high PC specs for optimal use, making it less suitable for beginners. For easier access, its online version, Stable Diffusion DreamStudio, offers a more user-friendly interface but with a subscription cost.

Conclusion

The journey of large language model (LLM) AI, which only gained widespread recognition in 2020, has been nothing short of extraordinary. Its rapid adoption across various sectors resembles the spread of wildfire – fast, far-reaching, and transformative. The pace at which these AI tools improve is exponential, bringing new capabilities and possibilities at every turn. As we stand on the cusp of 2024, our anticipation for the new technological advancements this year will bring is palpable. We’re not just observers; we’re participants in an era of rapid digital evolution. The future is bright and brimming with potential, and we at Vertex Pavilions are thrilled to be a part of this exciting journey into the next frontier of AI innovation.
