Vertex Pavilions recently completed a challenging and rewarding Scan-to-BIM project involving a historic Swiss multi-family home. This beautiful Fachwerk-style building, with its intricate wooden frame and unique charm, is a protected historical structure. Our client sought an accurate BIM model based on point cloud data, with an emphasis on preserving the building’s integrity for adaptive reuse.
Project Scope
The main objectives were to:
Create a highly precise BIM model from client-provided point cloud files.
Accurately represent the wooden framework and other structural elements.
Include specific historical furniture items in the model as they were also protected.
Achieve a level of detail that enables the design team to propose renovations without altering the building’s existing shape or structure.
Challenges and Approach
Historical Protection Constraints: As the building is under heritage protection, any design interventions had to respect strict regulations. This required meticulous attention to detail in modeling the structure to guide a compliant renovation process.
Accuracy Requirements: To ensure that the BIM model could support such precision, we aimed for an exceptionally low margin of error, approximately 1 cm, between the point cloud data and the final model.
Complex Wooden Framework: The Fachwerk construction style, characterized by exposed wooden beams and intricate patterns, demanded precise representation. Our team used specialized software to trace and model these elements from the dense point cloud.
Historical Furniture Modeling: Some original furniture pieces, also under protection, had to be modeled for inclusion in the BIM. This added another layer of complexity, as these items required high-detail modeling to capture their authenticity.
Results
The final BIM model provided:
A detailed representation of the entire structure, including the wooden framework and protected furniture.
A reliable base for the design team to develop renovation plans that comply with historical preservation guidelines.
An invaluable digital record of the building’s current state for future reference.
By achieving a 1 cm margin of error, Vertex Pavilions ensured that the model closely matched reality, empowering the designers to make precise decisions while respecting the historical essence of the building.
Conclusion
This project exemplifies our commitment to delivering high-precision Scan-to-BIM services, especially for historically significant structures. The successful modeling of this Swiss Fachwerk home not only supports the client’s renovation goals but also contributes to the ongoing preservation of architectural heritage. At Vertex Pavilions, we take pride in enabling the harmonious blend of tradition and innovation.
